TJ Middleton
TJ Middleton teaches Upper School Math. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics education and then taught college-prep math courses for 11 years at a public high school in Austin. Throughout the school year and during the summers, his experiences outside the classroom included working at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California, leading teacher-training workshops about alternative assessment projects and graphing calculator instruction, attending a National Science Foundation seminar regarding discrete math, and working as a consultant with the College Board’s Advanced Placement program. In 2001, Mr. Middleton's interest in backpacking inspired him to move to New Mexico, where he obtained a Master of Science degree at UNM in pure mathematics and mathematics education. From 2007 to 2010, he also worked at Manzano Mountain Retreat as a ropes course facilitator (challenge courses on logs and wires to develop teamwork and self-confidence). Attending recent conferences (NCTM in Boston and Phillips Exeter in New Hampshire) has sparked new interests in growth mindsets, dynamic math software, and problem-based learning. Mr. Middleton enters his 30th year of teaching in 2019-2020. Middy also enjoys hiking, backpacking, biking, snowshoeing, kayaking, and snowboarding.
